Saint Louis University offers Simon Recreation Center members tools and resources to improve their health and fitness. Sign up for fitness classes, including Zumba and spinning, or meet with a personal trainer to focus on your individual goals. Learn how to eat healthy on and around campus, and sample food at live cooking demonstrations. If you’re interested in improving your fitness and wellness, campus recreation has a program that can help.
Fitness Classes
Simon Recreation Center members can register for individual classes or purchase an all-inclusive fitness package. Summer rates can be found below.

Fitness Center Orientation
SLU students have the opportunity to become familiar with multiple fitness center spaces through complimentary fitness center orientations. Students can check in with the building supervisor or the fitness center attendant on duty and request an orientation.
Healthy Campus Week
SLU celebrates Healthy Campus Week in September. It includes a week full of activities that promote physical activity, healthy eating, stress management and overall wellness. This year’s events will be highlighted on social media with the hashtag #HealthyCampus.
IRON-SLU Triathlon
The goal of this program is to accumulate "Ironman" distances over a five-week period. This includes:
- 2.4 miles swimming (32 lengths per week/4.5 lengths per day)
- 112 miles bicycling (22.4 miles per week/3.2 miles per day)
- 26.2 miles running (5.24 miles per week/.75 miles per day)
Participants accumulate mileage on their own and self-report their totals each week. All participants who actively engage in the program will earn an IRON-SLU shirt and are eligible for raffle prizes.
The next challenge is scheduled for January 28 - March 3, 2019.
National Employee Health and Fitness Day
This is a great day to incorporate fitness into your schedule. The Simon Recreation Center will be open for complimentary usage to all faculty and staff. Employees do not need to be members to participate. Simply bring your SLU ID and enjoy the many benefits of exercise. Spring dates for 2019 coming soon.
Personal Training
Research has shown the best way to adhere to an exercise program is through personal attention and guidance from a fitness professional. Our certified personal trainers will help you implement an exercise program that fits your lifestyle.
Our trainers will help you:
- Design and implement a fitness program
- Learn proper form and execution of specific exercises
- Monitor weekly progress of program successes
- Provide motivation, adherence and education
- Redesign an existing training program
- Create a sport-specific or post-rehab training program
Register for a Personal Trainer
All new clients must start with a $75 initial personal training package, which includes a fitness assessment and two 60-minute training sessions. Afterward, you may purchase any of the continuing personal packages:

All clients must be members of the Simon Recreation Center. All personal instruction within the Simon Recreation Center must be scheduled through the fitness coordinator. No outside personal trainers are allowed to train in the Simon Recreation Center.
Initial Fitness Assessment
The initial fitness assessment will consist of:
- Blood pressure screening
- Body composition screening
- Three-minute step test
- Flexibility screening
- Muscle strength screening
The initial fitness assessment will take approximately 60 minutes to complete.
Routes
Simon Rec 5K Run
Try the Simon Recreation Center 5K run and enjoy the view of the north end of SLU’s campus. Since the starting and finishing points are both at the main entrance of the Simon Recreation Center, it is convenient and a great place to stretch out.
1.5 Mile Walking Tour
This route is perfect for exercise and gives you the chance to view some of Saint Louis University's attractions. The comfortable 1.5 mile walk leads you through the Billiken Sports Center, Laclede Park, and past Chaifetz Arena and the clock tower before heading back toward the Simon Rec Center. Note that this path includes crossing Grand Boulevard at two separate crosswalks.
Half-Mile Leisurely Walk
This simple loop will take you to the quad, Pius XII Memorial Library and the beautiful St. Francis Xavier College Church.
